You've probably seen a lot of talk in the news recently about the chemical, Bisphenol A, or BPA. Bans are now in place across the country, including Suffolk County NY, Chicago, IL and in the state of Minnesota. Companies like S.C. Johnson, Gerber, and Sonoco have stopped using the chemical in products intended for children.
Bisphenol A (BPA), a toxic chemical that is the building block of polycarbonate plastic, is widely used for a number of consumer products including baby bottles, sippy cups, re-usable water bottles, the lining of food cans, and other food containers. Bisphenol A harms reproductive and developmental health and they do so at low levels. Children and fetuses are at greatest risk because exposure can occur during critical times in development, resulting in life long adverse health impacts.
Thankfully, there is a bill in the U.S. Congress to ban this plasticizing chemical for use in all food and beverage containers. This is really exciting, as Clean Water Action has been working over the last several years to protect our health by encouraging public officials to ban toxics like Bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles, plastics and other food and beverage containers
The legislation is called The Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2009, Senate Bill #593/House Bill #1523. In order to get this bill passed, we need to show our members of Congress that we support banning BPA from food and beverage containers, and ask them to co-sponsor this bill. Our Senators and House Representatives need to see the strong NH citizen support for this health issue, so call them today!
