Nitrate Contamination

In summer 2009 Clean Water Fund collaborated with three other organizations to launch a community-based research process with the goal of documenting the economic, social, and potential health impacts of nitrate contamination of drinking water in the San Joaquin Valley. The project leverages the combined strength of technically rigorous research, grassroots leadership by affected communities, and seasoned policy analysis and advocacy. The new understanding generated by the research isbeing applied in community education and organizing, policy development, and advocacy to achieve safe and affordable water for all residents of the San Joaquin Valley. Rock Mining in The Everglades Agricultural Area

An Inventory of Existing Resources and Assessment of Impacts

Clean Water Action and its partners have conducted an analysis of existing scientific information on the demonstrated and potential impacts of continued large-scale rock mining in the sensitive Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA).

The outcome of this project is the creation of the first comprehensive bibliography of rock mining resources available for South Florida. In addition, the report provides recommendations for further studies that should be performed before moving forward on any new or expanded mining operations. Among these recommendations are the use of geophysical tools to provide more accurate images of the porous aquifer and further investigation into possible interference with federal and state Everglades Restoration initiatives. Results of the analysis have confirmed previous assessments that the issue of rock mining in the EAA is multi-faceted and highly scientific.

Study Finds Toxic BPA in Canned Food and Beverage Container Linings

The food in your pantry might not be as safe as you think, or as safe as it should be. Meals involving one or more cans of food can cause an individual to ingest levels of BPA (bisphenol A) that have been shown to cause health effects in laboratory animal studies, according to a new study released today by The National Workgroup for Safe Markets, a coalition of public health and environmental health groups, and Clean Water Action.

The study, No Silver Lining, is co-authored by Clean Water Action's Mia Davis and tested food from 50 cans from 19 US states and one Canadian province for BPA contamination.

Bisphenol A, a hormone-disrupting chemical that is the building block of polycarbonate plastic, has been found to leach out of six major brands of popular baby bottles sold in the United States and Canada. Baby's Toxic Bottle: Bisphenol A Leaching from Popular Brands of Baby Bottles, commissioned by a coalition of U.S. and Canadian environmental health organizations, tested plastic baby bottles in the U.S. and Canada, including products made by Avent, Disney/The First Years, Dr. Brown's, Evenflo, Gerber, and Playtex, for leaching of bisphenol A. The U.S. bottles were purchased in nine states at major retailers: Babies"R"Us, CVS, Target, Toys"R"Us, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart. Tests found these popular bottle brands leach levels of bisphenol A (5-8 parts per billion) when heated. Laboratory experiments with animals show that exposure to this level of bisphenol A causes a range of adverse effects.1
