A fracking rig
Clean Water Action is actively monitoring the controversial issue of fracking in Colorado. Thousands of Colorado gas wells have been fracked with potentially dangerous chemicals. The EPA and the State of Colorado are both studying these fracked wells for potential pollution problems. In August 2011, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper told the public that he would soon be requesting that the Colorado Oil and Gas Commission require that drilling companies publicly reveal the chemicals in their fracking solution. This step was heralded by conservation groups including Clean Water Action as a good first step in addressing concerns around fracking.
The proposed plan
As public debate about fracking increases, serious questions exist around Colorado about whether fracking causes pollution to groundwater and drinking water supplies. One potential site of concern to northern Coloradans involves fracking that has occurred on top of a proposed water reservoir site. The site is the proposed Galeton Reservoir northeast of Greeley, Colorado. There are over 30 permitted or producing wells on top of the proposed site, several of which are fracked. A recent article in the Northern Colorado Business Report, "Water Storage, Oil Drilling Don't Mix", discussed the extreme controversy around the water project and the fracking.
