Water is a necessity of life. Some would argue water is the necessity of life. Every living thing relies on water to survive—from humans and dogs to California's giant redwoods, Antarctica's tuxedoed penguins and Africa's majestic elephants. Earth, robbed of its natural water supply, would be a lonely place devoid of life.

Clean water should not be a luxury, but it is treated as one.

Scientists estimate 7 million Americans are sickened by contaminated tap water every year, and nearly 40% of our rivers fail to meet current clean water standards. We should not take our water for granted, yet too many of us do. Regional and national water resources may become more seasonal as global warming intensifies, increasing the frequency and severity of droughts and floods. Without clean, reliable water resources, we cannot grow food, produce energy, fuel transportation or manufacture goods. Without water, we cannot survive.

We speak for America's waters, from source to tap.

We were there in October 1972 when a bipartisan congressional majority passed the Clean Water Act into law. When the Bush administration initiated efforts to dismantle the Clean Water Act in 2003, we stood in protest and halted their efforts. Now, the Clean Water Act is again under attack, and we call on all American citizens to speak out in support of the Clean Water Authority Restoration Act, which will ensure safe and clean water for all people, animals and environments throughout the country.

Clean water is important to us all. Water is constantly recycled, and we all live downstream from some power plant, manufacturing facility or industrial agriculture complex. But healthy families, communities, environments and economies rely on clean, safe water. To ensure our water resources for the future, we must protect and conserve them today.
