Tax Considerations

Are you considering a significant gift to Clean Water Action?

Is tax deductibility for your contributions an important consideration?

As a 501(c)4 nonprofit, Clean Water Action's special tax status allows the organization to campaign effectively for stronger laws and their enforcement. Clean Water Action is able to communicate with its members about the records and positions of candidates for office, and about candidates endorsed or opposed by Clean Water Action.

As a result, gifts to Clean Water Action are not tax deductible as charitable contributions.

In addition, gifts in excess of $12,000 (per individual) or $24,000 (per married couple) per year may subject the donor(s) to federal gift tax liabilities.

Some Clean Water Action donors find that the financial advantages to the donor of gifting stocks or other appreciated assets to Clean Water Action may offset these considerations.

Many Clean Water Action supporters supplement their support for Clean Water Action with gifts to Clean Water Fund, a 501(c)3 nonprofit with whom Clean Water Action cooperates on certain programs. Gifts to Clean Water Fund are tax deductible as charitable contributions to the extent allowed by law and are not subject to any federal gift tax limitations.

Clean Water Action welcomes your questions and would be pleased to assist you in any aspect of arranging your gift(s) and contribution(s). Please contact us by phone, call 1-202-895-0420 x169, or by e-mail

The above information is not intended to substitute for expert professional advice regarding contributions. Please consult with qualified legal, financial or estate planning counsel regarding provisions of federal tax or election law on contributions from individuals or organizations.
