Statement On Energy and Climate Legislation by Clean Water Action President John DeCock

For Immediate Release
March 31, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC--Today's draft energy and climate legislation from the Energy and Commerce Committee is a strong starting point for curbing global warming and transforming our energy economy.

Addressing our climate crisis is an environmental issue, but it is also the most important economic issue of our time. It is a powerful public health issue. It is, for this generation, the most important moral issue we face.

We are very encouraged by the comprehensive, clean energy and climate legislation being introduced in the House of Representatives and we look forward to working with the Energy and Commerce Committee. Clean Water Action will continue to work to mobilize the public around a strong bill that moves us beyond the polluting, water-wasting energy sources of yesterday and toward the clean energy technologies that will repower, refuel, and rebuild our economy. Clean Water Action will continue to support legislation that puts people to work, safeguards resources for the future and holds polluters accountable for the global warming pollution they emit.

The economic recovery package and budget were down payments for the future security and prosperity of our country. We applaud Chairman Waxman for responding to the calls President Obama made in his address to Congress and just last week in his press conference by moving forward with comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation.
