Huge Victory in Virginia!

November 8, 2017

On Tuesday, November 7, the people of Virginia led the way and voted for clean water, climate action and the environment, and voted against the Trump Administration’s anti-science agenda.

Through the support of clean water voters like you, Ralph Northam won the race for governor and Kathleen Murphy won her reelection to the House of Delegates. This is a huge victory for our environment, our water and our communities.

Last night showed that Americans are rejecting leaders who won't join us to protect our rights, our environment, and our health.

HUGE WIN: General Assembly votes to protect Rhode Island families and first responders!

September 19, 2017

Yesterday, the Rhode Island House of Representatives voted to pass H5082, which will phase out the use of organohalogens, a dangerous chemical used in flame retardants that is associated with cancer and respiratory ailments.

The Senate already unanimously passed this bill in the spring, but when the General Assembly adjourned suddenly in June, the House version was left in legislative limbo. Over the summer, we worked to make sure that a strong version of this bill would be on the agenda  when the General Assembly reconvened in the fall to address its unfinished business.

Engaging the Marketplace & Winning

April 26, 2017

Our members are familiar with many of the aspects of Clean Water Action advocacy: promoting legislation, endorsing candidates, field and phone canvassing, educational outreach.

Several of our state offices also do direct engagement with the business community to promote best practices on issues like chemical policy and waste management. Our New England offices (Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts) have been working for over a year with management at CVS Health on developing a safer chemical policy.

When the Youth Tritons swim club contacted us about doing a swimmathon to benefit Clean Water Fund, on the occasion of the Tritons’ 30th Anniversary, we said “Yes!” – of course. Our goal is their goal: fishable, SWIMMABLE, drinkable water, for everyone!

One Step Forward, One Step Back

June 30, 2016

Advocating for environmental issues in the Rhode Island General Assembly is a complicated process that requires persistence, patience and creative approaches. Economic growth and job creation - not the environment - are often the first concerns on the minds of lawmakers.
