Kaine Keeps Ban On Offshore Drilling

Once again, during the 2006 Virginia legislative session, there was an effort from Virginia state legislators to lift the moratorium against offshore drilling to search for natural gas. Such drilling would be certain to have a detrimental effect on Virginia's coastal waters, and would puncture a hole in the ban against such drilling along the Atlantic Coast. Having seen the fights and devastation along California and the rest of the west coast from offshore drilling, Americans know better than to open up the east coast to the environmental devastation that ensues from the inevitable oil spills that would take place.

Write Governor Tim Kaine and thank him for removing language that would have lifted the moratorium. Remind him and your representatives that even allowing a study puts the Commonwealth on a slippery slope. If natural gas is discovered, it will be much more difficult to withstand the energy industry's political pressure to drill.
