Texas legislators want to give the oil and gas industry a handout. House Bill 433, filed by State Rep. Ken King, would impose a new tax on all sources of electrical generation in Texas except natural gas. This would give an unfair economic advantage to a fuel which is a leading driver of climate change and whose extraction requires the use of vast amount of water and leaves much of this water polluted with toxic chemicals. The cost of green energy such as wind and solar would be artificially increased, and these increases would be passed on to ordinary ratepayers.
We should not be creating artificial barriers to the growth of renewable energy which can power our growing economy and create new jobs for Texans without polluting our air and water.
