We Need To Protect the Great Lakes!

The Great Lakes are national treasures. They contain 20% of the Earth's fresh surface water and drinking water to millions. The Great Lakes are vital to the people, communities, wildlife, and economy of the eight-state Great Lakes region. They should be protected now, and for future generations.

Unfortunately the Great Lakes face serious threats from pollution and from President Trump's administration. His recent budget request contains devastating cuts to the programs that protect the Great Lakes. It's up to us to stop this shortsighted plan. And we need you! Take action today and get in touch with your U.S. Representative and Senators.  Urge them to protect the Great Lakes by fully funding essential programs and infrastructure investments .

We have made real progress restoring and protecting the Great Lakes, thanks to the more than $2 billion that has been invested through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) since 2010.  Thousands of projects across the basin are cleaning up toxic sediments, stopping the spread of invasive species, preventing farm field and city street runoff in the lakes, and ending sewer overflows. These successes would not have been possible without the GLRI.

But there is still much work to do.

President Trump tried to cut the GLRI last year. But Minnesotans and other Americans from the region spoke up and said no. Congress rejected Trump's dangerous proposal. We need our Senators and Representatives to do reject this bad idea gain. Trump's  budget would virtually eliminates GLRI funding—cutting it by 90% down to 30 million for the year. The proposed budget also contains steep cuts to agencies that protect our health like the Environmental Protection Agency, which administers the GLRI, and enforces important laws like the Clean Water Act.

Help us stop this! Contact your Senators and your Representative now.
