Support Small Businesses in Their Time of Need

We love our partners in our ReThink Disposable program. Those businesses have worked hard to eliminate their use of single-use food ware by switching to reusable food ware, and have also helped to educate their customers about why it is so important to move away from our disposable culture. And we’re crushed that many of these businesses, these friends have been deeply impacted by over the past 6 weeks.

More Foam Bans In California: Milpitas Adopts First Reading Of Expanded Polystyrene Foodware Ordinance

Excitingly, on May 16, 2017, Milpitas City Council in California held a public hearing and adopted the first reading of an Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foodware ordinance necessary to restrict the provision of EPS foam food service ware and protect public health, safety, and welfare.

What Can Aquariums Do To Reduce Plastic Pollution?

Aquariums are in a great position to educate their visitors about the harmful impacts of plastic pollution. Lots of people visit aquariums—more than 183 million, worldwide, each year—and, according to research, they trust them more than most other public and private agencies.

I was thrilled to be invited to speak at a gathering of Aquarium staff from all over the country in Monterey Bay last month. About 100 guests representing 20 aquariums, nine environmental non-profits, a handful of consultancies, and a food and retail service provider participated in the event.

As part of my work with ReThink Disposable it is my job to sign up businesses to our program. By far, the most satisfying aspect of my job is when I connect with a business owner and together, we build the business the owner has always wanted.

What’s So Great About Oakland, California? (Apart From Everything, Obviously).

Clean Water’s California office is located right in the heart of downtown Oakland—a city that even green-minded Europeans are talking about as a center for reducing carbon emissions associated with commerce. 

For 21 years, the City of Oakland has organized an annual earth expo in Frank Ogawa Plaza right outside our office, and more than 3,000 people attended this week, where we tabled along with 100 other organizations focused on a variety of sustainability issues.
