Subsistence Fishing : Clean up San Francisco Bay For Everyone, Not Just For Some
Clean Water Action is demanding that the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board protects subsistence fishers and their families from mercury and other bioaccumulative contaminants.
Thousands of people fish in San Francisco Bay to put food on their table out of economic need or cultural tradition. These "subsistence" fishers often consume fish between four and five times a week, resulting in unsafe exposure to pollutants.

Because the Regional Water Board has not formally recognized subsistence fishing in the Bay, cleanup plans will not protect most subsistence fishers who consume high levels of fish from the bay. In other words, the proposed standards protect some people but not those who are most impacted. We need them to act now and protect all Californians.
