The Trump Administration and Our Environment

Donald Trump's presidency is shaping up to be a disaster for our environment, our water, and our health.

It's as simple as that.

Donald Trump on the Issues

We’re going to rescind all the Obama job destroying executive actions including the Waters of the United States rule.

During the campaign, Donald Trump had this to say about EPA and the Clean Water Rule: "Environmental Protection, what they do is a disgrace. Every week they come out with new regulations. They're making it impossible…you can’t destroy businesses. Since being elected, Donald Trump has appointed people to the EPA transition team who don't accept the urgency of the climate crisis and have fought against every to act on climate. He nominated Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, who is currently suing EPA to stop the Clean Water Rule and has sued to stop many commonsense protections for our air and public health.

President-elect Donald Trump and Vice-President Elect Governor Mike Pence question the overwhelming scientific consensus on human-caused climate change.

  • Donald Trump claims the climate change is a hoax perpetrated by China or simply a guise to raise taxes.
  • As Governor, Mike Pence declared Indiana would not comply with the landmark Clean Power Plan soon after it was released by the Obama administration.

Donald Trump believes we need to mine more coal and drill for more oil and gas and would approve the Keystone pipeline.

His nominees for Secretary of State and the Department of Energy are equally concerning. Rex Tillerson is the CEO of Exxon Mobil, a company that knew about climate change for years, but lied about it.

Former Texas Governor Rick Perry has been nominated to lead the Department of Energy, a department he once wanted to eliminate. As Governor of Texas he attempted to fast track more than a dozen permits for coal mining. He is on the board of Energy Transfer Partners, the company behind the Dakota Access pipeline.

The GOP Platform

In addition to the Donald Trump's actions, the Republican Party platform weakens protections for our water and air, increases oil and gas activities on public lands and in sensitive areas, and turns back the clock on landmark environmental safeguards. We can expect the Paul Ryan House and Mitch McConnell Senate to work to achieve many of these goals.

The Platform calls for an "all-of-the-above" approach to energy production which means more oil and gas drilling and coal mining.

  • In addition to opening public lands and coastal waters to fossil fuel production, the platform also calls for allowing removing federal control of energy production on public lands.

The Platform has this to say about the Clean Power Plan: "We will do away with it altogether."

On Keystone: "We intend to finish that pipeline and others"

When it comes to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Platform calls for doing away with it as we know it, creating an inconsistent patchwork of state regulation, which would result in weaker protections for our water, air, public lands, and wildlife:

We propose to shift responsibility for environmental regulation from the federal bureaucracy to the states and to transform the EPA into an independent bipartisan commission.

Finally, the Republican Platform calls for undermining landmark laws like the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, weakening the Endangered Species Act, and pulling out of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change.

Any one of these would be bad for our environment and our health. Taken together, these would be a disaster for the country and the world.

We can’t go backwards. We have to fight. Tell Donald Trump that he will not have the last word on our water.
