Clean Water Action Endorses Senator Whitehouse and Representative Cicilline
Providence -- Clean Water Action is pleased to announce its endorsement of US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and US Congressman David Cicilline in the primary election to be held on Wednesday, September 12th.
Since his election in 2006, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has been the face of fighting climate change and protecting our oceans in the US Senate. He has worked to support the transition to a clean energy economy by introducing the WIND Act to incentivize offshore wind production. As the founding member of the bipartisan Senate Oceans Caucus, he is leading the national conversation on reducing marine debris and plastic pollution, and he introduced legislation in the Senate earlier this year to prohibit drilling for fossil fuels off the New England coast.
Congressman David Cicilline has worked to represent Rhode Island’s environmental concerns and priorities at the national level since his election in 2010. He has annually led efforts to ensure funding for the Southern New England Estuaries Program, supported efforts to invest in renewable energy, and opposed efforts to weaken our cornerstone environmental laws like the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts. Earlier this year, he introduced the House companion to Senator Whitehouse’s offshore drilling prohibition bill.
“Throughout their tenure in the US Senate and House of Representatives, Senator Whitehouse and Congressman Cicilline have worked tirelessly to ensure the protection of our state’s environment and stewardship of its natural resources,” said Johnathan Berard, Clean Water Action’s Rhode Island State Director. “With the current administration doing their best to unwind all of the progress we have made to protect our environment over the last five decades, it is critical that we have representatives in Washington, DC, like Senator Whitehouse and Congressman Cicilline fighting tooth and nail to keep those protections in place.”
Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table.
