Clean Water Action, along with a number of other organizations, has joined with Marylanders for Food and Farm Worker Protection in supporting a package of legislation to protect Maryland’s seafood and poultry processing and farm workers from COVID-19. This package includes paid sick leave expansion, personal protective equipment for workers, increased testing, and increased protections for workers to advocate for themselves against dangerous working conditions.

Maryland is poised to become the second state in the country to ban the routine use of antibiotics in farm animals. The Keep Antibiotics Effective Act has passed through both the House of Delegates and the Senate; now one of those chambers has to fully pass its counterpart’s bill by Monday.
The antibiotics that we rely on are becoming ineffective. Animals are prescribed routine, low-doses of antibiotics to prevent infection, creating the perfect breeding ground for antibiotic resistant bacteria. The World Health Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Center for Disease Control all agree that these antibiotic resistant bacteria leave the farm and pose a human health risk.
